Paddock Hills, Florissant

The first post-World War II subdivision we’re going to look at in Florissant is Paddock Hills, located behind the Church of the Master off Parker Road.

The prolific Mayer-Raisher Mayer developed subdivisions around the metropolitan region, but often specialized in ranch houses, as seen in these photographs.

Interestingly, there is what appears to be linoleum floors in the main entertaining spaces of the house, including the living room.

If you look closely below, you can see the famous Minoru Yamasaki-designed main terminal of Lambert International Airport, but with only three bays. Remember, a total of six were planned, but they only were able to complete one more for a total of four.

The kitchen and its technology have certainly changed dramatically since the late 1950s, however.

Hi Chris, thanks for doing these. Those midcentury homes look really slick furnished with midcentury furniture! Do you know if there’s any significance to the “flat top” homes near St. Ferdinand Park. I saw from old maps it appears to be one of the earliest post-War developments. They are jus so unique and you don’t see them anywhere else (that I know of).

That star-burst chandelier is the same, or very similar to the chandelier in our home in (what became known as) Chesterfield.

Do you know where or if I could get the original lot survey map for plat 7?

    1. cnaffziger says:

Terri, if those existed, they would be available at the St. Louis County building in Clayton. But make sure to call before going down there.

Interesting! My aunt and uncle lived there and I always loved visiting. Do you know if Robert Elkington was the architect for this subdivision? Thanks.
