Update: It should be noted this is the only shopping mall I’ve photographed in the region that is not a dead mall, thus there is no tag to describe such a phenomenon. I’ve never photographed South County Mall, Mid Rivers Mall or West County Center. I’d never been over to St. Clair Square Mall, and…
Landmarks of South County?
The editor of B.E.L.T. and I were recently discussing our lack of knowledge of major architectural landmarks in South County. Specifically, any great churches, relatively intact main streets or other noteworthy houses or businesses? We’d like to hear from you. By the way, I was knocked out with the flu the last couple of days,…
New North St. Louis and Further Afield Pages
Update: These pages are obviously done now, but are occasionally revised, as are all the other pages at the top of this screen. I’ve begun to create pages for the major sections of my blog, and you can find them at the top of the blog. My first two pages, on North St. Louis and…
Last Remaining Gasometer
Update: This last gasometer in the St. Louis region was torn down shortly after this photograph was taken in the winter of 2013. Once one of four gasometers built in the St. Louis area, it is now the last one, clinging to life in splendid isolation on Natural Bridge Avenue.
The Ville #2
Update: I broke up the Ville and Greater Ville tag into The Ville and The Greater Ville tags to reflect the architectural variety and conditions of the large area that make up the two neighborhoods. I revisited the intersection of St. Louis and Marcus avenues, seen below, in July of 2022. I revisited the area…
Wells-Goodfellow #2
Update: I returned in February of 2017 for an extensive photographic tour of the neighborhood, which begins here, with this post. For all Wells-Goodfellow posts, click the hyper link below. I visited the Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood several years ago, focusing on St. Louis Avenue. I returned and while I tried to retrace my steps, I saw…
Borderlands: Skinker Parkway and Kienlen Avenue
Most St. Louisans have driven Skinker between Highway 40 and Delmar, but it continues on for several more miles and changes its name to Kienlen Avenue, skirting the border of the city and county. What is surprising is the large number of relatively recent, if certainly bombed-out apartment complexes lining the street. The area, long…
Crestwood Interior, Revisited
Update: Demolished in mid-2016. We proceeded inside of the mall, and were met with abject abandonment. One rumor says the stores were all forced to close on March 1st, but I don’t know if that’s true or not. Thinking back, I was afraid of photographing the interior of the mall out of fear of the…
Crestwood Revisited, Exterior
Update: Demolished in mid-2016. I went back with my parents to Crestwood Mall to check out the going out of business sale at the last remaining anchor at the mall, Sears. Scroll down and read about the development of the mall here. Originally part of the strip mall before it was expanded and enclosed in…
Alswel, Revisited
Update: See more photos here and historic photos here. A reader snapped an up close picture of Alswel recently while visiting a friend in the neighborhood. It’s looking good after all of these years. Photo by Joanne Owens
