Descendant of the famous Founding Father George Mason, Richard Barnes Mason was the governor of California, having fought in the Mexican American War and the Black Hawk War. Interestingly, he was buried in 1850, just one year after the cemetery was founded, making this one of the oldest burials in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
