San Francisco Avenue Between Clarence and North Taylor Avenues, Penrose

Heading west, we pass by the former Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, which was severely damaged by the tornado of May 16, 2025. I think it might be abandoned, but I am not sure. On the south side of the street, there is this lone house.

San Francisco Avenue doglegs to the left, or south at the front door of Ashland Elementary School, and continues on to the west.

This row of houses date from 1915; these sort of false roofs are common in the North Side on both sides of Natural Bridge Avenue.

Besides the church, houses still show evidence of damage by the tornado.

And yes, there is a reason why there are all of these newer houses all of the sudden on this stretch of San Francisco Avenue.

The German General Protestant Orphans Home, which had an address of 4447 Natural Bridge Avenue, was located here from here from the late 1880s to 1962. That would match the architecture of the homes now built on the site. The institution is now located in St. Louis County and is known as Youthbridge Community Foundation.

Moving along from the once large parcel of the Home, there are a scattering of houses before we arrive at North Taylor Avenue.
