The Security Building is an important link to the commercial core of St. Louis before the arrival of Chicago School skyscrapers further west, not particularly tall, and architecturally unique. Located on what was once called the “Wall Street of the West,” surely it is no coincidence the Federal Reserve is located next door. The Security is a strange but interesting mix of architectural styles; it’s more of a rule-breaking Neo-Classicism down on the bottom, but the upper stories transition into a Romanesque Revival style. Its black-roofed dome, long a fixture of this part of downtown, was obscured by the construction of the neighboring parking garage.
