I’ve been interested in the old Manchester Road, which is now named Southwest Avenue, for awhile now. I looked at another section of this street back in August of 2021.

This is in Clifton Heights, so there are some really old homes, and some more recent ones built in the Twentieth Century.

The rolling topography shows how the street follows a ridge line. And I can also see why they rerouted Manchester Road along a more direct and flat orientation down in the Des Peres River valley.

This was a suburban area for much of its history.

There are many beautiful Queen Anne style homes.

I have a 1910 Census record showing my grandfather living at “1406 Southwest”. Present day maps do not show this location..Any idea where that address was in 1910 ?
Whew, that’s a tough one. The streets were renumbered for the first time in the middle of the Civil War, but I didn’t know there was any kind of major renumbering at a later date. Southwest used to be longer and is now called Vandeventer. Do you know what part of the city they lived in at all? Churches or schools attended?
