Moving west of North 23rd Street, we see much less lavish homes.
And if we look closely many, but not all, are actually two-family houses. I always joke in St. Louis architects designed multi-family houses to look like single families.
Of course, there are obvious multi-family apartment buildings like the ones below.
But as I’ve mentioned before, all apartment buildings except high rises are really just four-families squished together.
Wait, we’ve made it to North 25th Street but we never passed over North 24th Street. Welcome to the street grid of St. Louis, where the curve of the Mississippi River squeezed out streets; there is even an area of North St. Louis where it jumps by three street numbers.
Looking over those 4-plexes, I recall that most Los Angeles gives is a one bedroom apartment. The St Louis apartments, at least those built prior to 1960. How well I recall the friend’s apartments with a living, dining kitchen, bedrooms and laundry area. Those are treasures compared with what will come and deserve preservation as much as can be preserved.
