St. Paul Roman Catholic Cathedral, Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham was founded in 1871, and the first Catholic church, a rustic affair, was founded in 1872, so while Alabama is famous for the Southern Baptist Church, Catholicism still has a presence.

The elegant church of St. Paul became the cathedral of Birmingham in 1969, after having been a co-cathedral with Mobile since 1955. Mobile, having been founded by the French in 1702, had long dominated Alabama. Now there are two dioceses in the state.

The cathedral is Gothic Revival in style, but I hesitate to give a school from which it is derived. Perhaps English in a certain way? This current cathedral was built in 1890.

Below is the bishop’s house or rectory, I believe.

In the garden, above the graves of the bishops, is a depiction of the Death of St. Joseph, which we’ve also seen from St. Liborius.

The interior features groin vaulting with blue accents.
