United States Post Office and Courthouse, Quincy, Illinois

There’s a little bit of Paris in downtown Quincy in the United States Post Office and Courthouse. In what could easily be one of the most beautiful buildings in the Midwest, the 1887 design by Mifflin E. Bell shows the continued influence of the French Renaissance Revival and the redevelopment of the French capital by the Baron von Hausmann. Perhaps even more amazingly, the building has never been scarred with a sad and desultory Modernist addition that throws off the balance of the classical proportions of the original design.
