A massive, thirty-six inch water main burst at the intersection of North Blair Avenue and Penrose Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood just down the hill from the Grand and Bissell watertowers (standpipes, technically).

Obviously, while the standpipes are long out of use, the water line system still uses a route that once passed through them, hence the huge pipe coming from them.

Of note, and probably a coincidence, this is near the still-unresolved sewer main break at North Blair and Farragut, which was once a deep valley. I am curious about this water main break, as can be seen here (and Google satellite) that there were and are two large metal plates and around six manholes above the break. I reached out to a reader, whose family owned Onions Market at the southeast corner of the intersection, and she said that there were no problems with breaks during her family’s time living there.
