Edward “Ted” and Pat Jones-Confluence Point State Park

I completed the trifecta of visiting all three of the corners of the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers two Saturdays ago when we visited Edward “Ted” and Pat Jones-Confluence Point State Park at the furthest eastern edge of St. Charles County.

Looking across the Mississippi River, you can spot the tower in Hartford that I visited way back in July of 2010. Just out of view, Alton is to the north.

There was a fair amount of barge traffic working its way up and down the river just north of the Chain of Rocks Canal.

Above, you can see where the two rivers meet; the Mississippi was rough while the Missouri River was smooth.

The rivers have been low right now due to the drought, and people were walking far out into the channel on dry land over on the St. Louis County side in the Columbia Bottoms Conservation Area.

Of course, the actual point we are standing on is the creation of the Army Corps of Engineers, so it would be unrecognizable to Lewis and Clark or anyone in the past.

There are helpful markers every so often up the ridge to let people know which river is which. Large amounts of sediment have to be removed every so often.
