Ridgetop and Berkshire

Albert T. Terry and A.R. Schollmeyer Real Estate Co. laid out Ridgetop in 1927 and began selling lots the same year. Maritz and Young designed houses in the subdivision, just south of Clayton Road near McKnight Road.

Like most of these subdivisions laid out in the years around World War I when commutes to the city grew shorter due to the automobile, there are often houses from much later periods due to the lots selling slowly. The United Investment Company also played a role in constructing houses.

An example of a houses was two stories in height and had two bathrooms on the first floor. There are vague intimations to what I suspect are restrictive covenants in the deeds.

Nearby is the Berkshire subdivision, which was laid out in the 1930s, with houses being advertised in the 1940s by the Federer Realty Company.

The houses were advertised as having eight rooms, which I suppose was quite large at the time, and also were vaguely described as “restricted.”

Five bedrooms, three bathrooms, three porches and even a rec room in the basement were all the latest amenities the company boasted for these new houses.
