Update: I returned to this intersection in 2019.

Gravois Avenue Vignettes
Has anyone every comprehensively studied Gravois Avenue through South City?? It’s a strange pastiche of old gas stations, storefronts, parking lots and a couple of houses mixed in between. When you come out on the north end of the street, the downtown and the Near South Side comes into view. One can only imagine the…
Fronts and Backs, Gravois Avenue at Ohio Avenue
I’m continually fascinated with the intact building stock surrounding St. Francis de Sales Church on Gravois.? All of the corners at this complicated intersection are intact, save on.? I hope it stays that way. While photographing the church, I realized that the backs of these aforementioned buildings are fascinating in their own right.? Not meant…
The Intersection of Jefferson and Gravois Avenues
Update: I went back and covered this intersection extensively in the late summer of 2020 with new and historic photos. See the houses to the southeast of this intersection from 2019. I was sitting at the intersection of Gravois and Jefferson last weekend, when I began to wonder what this crossing of two of the…
St. Francis de Sales, Revisited
I never get tired of St. Francis de Sales Oratory on south Gravois.? Rising three hundred feet above the street, the spire is one of the tallest in the world, so I’ve been told. I looked at it years ago, and you can see that post here. Designed in the hallkirche style, which is a…
Falstaff Brewery Plant Two, Former Otto Stifel/Union Brewery
There’s not a whole lot left of Plant Two, other than a couple of periphery buildings. The central triangular block of brewery buildings were torn down decades ago for a parking lot, sadly typifying much of Gravois Avenue through the city. Like the Schorr-Kolkschneider Brewery, it occupies a triangular block. There are a couple of…
Vibrant Streetscapes at Grand and Gravois
Update: The building above, a former funeral home, was damaged by fire on July 16, 2020. See it and its neighbors post-fire in this post from October of 2020. The fire damage has now been repaired, as of the winter of 2022. The intersection of Grand and Gravois can be a bit intimidating, but looking…
Kutis Funeral Home
Update: This is a truly awful photo. I went back and photographed the building better in September of 2020. You can see those photos here. I’ve always been intrigued by the Kutis Funeral Home on Gravois at Arsenal; it’s an odd building architecturally, though certainly perhaps because of its use it needed to be.
Arsenal and Gravois
I love how this building wraps around the oddly angle corner of Arsenal and Gravois; you don’t see buildings doing that so much anymore.
Fenton
When one first thinks of Fenton, the Chrysler Plant comes to mind, stretching across the valley floor of the Meramec River. But Fenton also has a small town side, separate from the miles of suburban tract housing built for autoworkers, or the huge McMansions rising in the post-industrial age of the far southwestern municipality. Downtown…
