Kingshighway, the busiest traffic artery in St. Louis, comes to a rather anticlimactic end at a group of beautiful buildings on Gravois Avenue. But again, occupancy is good, and there is an interesting mix of building stock. There’s this cool streamline modern storefront reskin. With its original stainless steel or chrome doors. ?? This turreted…

Gravois at the City Limits
Gravois Avenue tries to keep its urban character right up to the city limits, but the Missouri Department of Transport has done its best to make this stretch of historic buildings about as inhospitable to human beings as possible. It’s too bad, because the houses lining the side streets would be perfect for families to…
New Picker’s Cemetery, Gatewood Gardens Cemetery
Update: Added City plat maps showing boundaries of both New Picker’s/Gatewood Gardens and Sts. Peter and Paul cemeteries to the end of this post in July of 2020. New Picker’s Cemetery, or Gatewood Gardens Cemetery as it’s now known, possesses some of the oldest history in the City of St. Louis. It traces its roots…
Old Falstaff Museum of Brewing
Update: The building is now abandoned as of the winter of 2022, but probably much earlier. I’m curious if anyone remembers visiting the Falstaff Hospitality Room or the Brewing Museum on Gravois. It seems to be a payday loan office now. The museum closed in 1977.
Gravois/Arsenal/Pennsylvania
Update: See other views of this intersection in 2017 and 2019.
Sunset Memorial Park
Update: See the cemetery again in the summer of 2018. There are so many cemeteries in St. Louis, and each one has its story. Located down along the major roads heading out of the city, such as Gravois in this case, or Bellefontaine or St. Charles Rock Roads to the north, many of these cemeteries…
St. Francis de Sales, Wide Angle Lens
I was never happy with my photos of St. Francis de Sales’s front facade, but I liked this one that I took with my new wide angle lens.
Gravois at Morganford, Bevo
Update: See the interior of Bevo Mill in July of 2022. I went back and photographed the Stork Inn in 2014. You can see the Feasting Fox, originally known as the Gretchen Inn, in this post here, also from 2014. See Delor Street west of this intersection from March of 2023. See Morgan Ford north…
Looking Northeast, Gravois Avenue at Arsenal Street and Pennsylvania Avenue
Update: I returned to this intersection in 2019.
Gravois Avenue Vignettes
Has anyone every comprehensively studied Gravois Avenue through South City?? It’s a strange pastiche of old gas stations, storefronts, parking lots and a couple of houses mixed in between. When you come out on the north end of the street, the downtown and the Near South Side comes into view. One can only imagine the…
