The Romanesque Revival Apartment Building, Soulard

Update: See the building on a sunnier day in this post (ninth photograph).

I’ve always been fascinated by this Romanesque Revival apartment building at the southeast corner of Lami and Twelfth Street in Soulard. It used to be, in its last iteration, a very low rent building, with monthly rates around $200. See it here before being renovated when I photographed it in June of 2015.

I also was fascinated by the courtyard or lightwell visible in the Sanborn maps.

It certainly looks different now, and is no longer painted red. The condos go for over $250,000 and its no longer low rent.

But I wish I knew more about the story behind this unique building.
