The Chatillon-DeMenil House is a perfect example of a Greek Revival mansion, expanded at a time when the Italianate and Second Empire styles had become much more popular in St. Louis. Its stern Ionic colonnade may have come from an earlier structure torn down in downtown St. Louis.
It sits in an island of calm by I-55, which was rerouted at the last second to preserve the house (and a corner of the Lemp Brewery across the street).
The front colonnade has been renovated recently, thanks to generous donations.
Not only is this a wonderful house museum but the director’s warm welcome and enthusiasm is a joy to behold!
