The Beauty of Dutchtown, Part 50: Meramec Street Between Michigan and Minnesota Avenues, North Side

Update: I revisited this block in December of 2022.

Next up is a row of houses, primarily in the Second Empire style but with a couple of houses that are from later in the early Twentieth Century.

Unlike most of Meramec Street in this area, much of this block is shrouded by tall trees.

But the housing stock is equal to more famous neighborhoods with its three story homes.

Then there’s this beautiful duplex on the corner which is sitting empty.

Meramec Street was my turf back in the ’40’s and ’50’s…know every inch of it between Grand and Broadway. By the way, we old Deutschers hate the misspelling of Deutschtown as Dutchtown. We were/are German (Deutsch), not Dutch.

Indeed, I’ve had to explain to a lot of people we didn’t have a huge population of immigrants from the Netherlands in St. Louis.
